MTC Namibia and Motorola have been short-listed in the category of “Best Use of Mobile for Social and Economic Development” at the GSM Association’s Global Mobile Awards 2008. The award winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held on Tuesday February 12, 2008 during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

MTC Namibia today announced a revision of its corporate identity to reflect the changes that have taken place in its environment and in its service and product portfolios during the past 13 years of business. The announcement was made at a media conference in the city of Windhoek.

After extensive trials MTC Namibia blazes another trail in the arena of service offerings with the launch of a “Call Me Back” Service to replace “missed calls”.
Windhoek, Namibia – 15 May 2008 - MTC Namibia will be launching a new service tomorrow morning (16 May 2008) named CallMe. It is a USSD-based service whereby customers can send a USSD message which will result in a third party receiving an sms request to call that person back.

Since December 2007, Namibia’s leading mobile telecommunications operator, MTC, has undertaken a very ambitious roll-out programme which will cost nearly N$300 million in order to completely upgrade its core network by end September 2008. The upgrade will increase both the capacity and the quality of its network to cater for the rapid growth in customer numbers which recently eclipsed 950 000 active users in a country of a mere 2 million inhabitants.

Namibian mobile phone users have recently been experiencing increase in the amount of fake text messages announcing competition winnings. MTC advises clients to be vigilant and avoid falling into the trap.

MTC refutes the allegations of exorbitant interconnect charges and unfair treatment by Telecom Namibia. The rates in Namibia were offered to MTC by Telecom Namibia and Cell One contrary to the claims by both parties when they have finally woken up to realise that their businesses are bleeding from mistakes they have made in the past. MTC expects Telecom Namibia to request a formal audience to negotiate any pricing issues directly instead of using the media platform to do so.

The event this morning takes place against the backdrop of major negative reporting and poor performance of many of our National sporting codes. There is not a day that passes without us being fed so much negativity that we run the risk of being renamed from being the Land of the Brave to a Land of the Mourners. If we are not complaining about the poor showing of our sportmen and women it is about the sorry state of the administration of many a codes or infighting for positions. I am sure we are all agreed that this state of affairs is no manner in which to build a winning nation.

MTC Namibia in collaboration with The Warehouse Theatre and Radio Wave proudly presents ‘In The Nik’ with South African standup comedian Nik Rabinowitz. Nik Rabinowitz grew up on a farm outside Cape Town where he learnt to climb trees, make pots and speak Xhosa. After graduating from UCT with a Business Science Degree he travelled Southern Africa with a theatre company and a herd of donkeys. It’s no coincidence his stand-up comedy career began shortly thereafter, appearing on Comedy Showcase as renowned Zimbabwean donkey-rustler Jabulani Ndlovu.
