MTC operates in one of the fastest and most advanced technological industries, with endless opportunities for improvement.
Rapid changes in the business environment, coupled with constant technological advancements (4G/LTE/Internet/Fibre) and increasing arrays of products and services, as well as ever growing customer demands requires MTC to stay abreast of these developments, always at a reasonable cost.
The year under review again saw MTC investing huge focus, efforts and capital into different areas of the business to ensure that our customers are provided with ongoing high quality connection to the MTC network throughout the country.
The following list shows areas that were addressed during the year under review:
- Continued participation and investments in the WACS sea cable project.
- A milestone agreement was reached with NamPower for access to NamPower's dark fibres for the deployment of MTC's 40 GB National DWDM fibre backbone.
- A project was started with Huawei as supplier of the 40 GB DWDM fibre backbone network, that will allow MTC to connect WACS capacity from Swakopmund (at the coast) to the capital, Windhoek, as well as further extension of the fibre backbone to Oshakati in the northern parts of Namibia and to the South African border.
- The deployment of a Metro Fibre ring in the City of Windhoek that will play a key role in transporting bandwidth in the city and also carrying the by-pass traffic from the coast to the north and to the South African border.
- Expansion of MTC's microwave transmission links is meant to reduce lease line OPEX cost, increase availability and allow auto provisioning of required capacity.
- Permanent capacity expansions on the 2G and 3G networks.
- Network Coverage expansion through the addition of 21 new coverage sites throughout Namibia.
- Investments in free cooling for some of the equipment containers to optimise power consumptions.
- Swap-out of existing HLR with NEW ATCA architecture HLR with licenses for 2,2 million customers.
- Circuit Switch MSS license upgrade to 1325K and MGW to 1458K.
- GE-interface upgrade between the prepaid system (SCP's) and SGSN.
- BlackBerry® provisioning interface deployed on prepaid system and billing options on postpaid made available for service.
- Developments for data package acquisition via SMS and USSD.
- POS development to allow bundling of products.
- DSTV Mobile Systems integration to billing system.
- Auto migration of customers to lower package if contract is not renewed.
- PeerApp Cache solution operational since December 2010.
- New Internet Gateway Router with higher capacity
- Adoption of Cyberoam - mail, anti-spam and web filtering solution for our corporate environment.
- Phase one of CRM project implemented with contract automation.
What Else?
The future is always built from the past and present. Permanent monitoring of availability and Quality of Service (QoS) (Drop Call Rate, Call Setup Rate, Benchmark campaigns) with actions at all levels from the entire technical team assures customer service levels according to the world's best telecommunication practices.
